Agfest, the agricultural festival of Tasmania, is on again this year from Thursday May 5th until Saturday May the 7th at Quercus Rural Youth Park in Carrick.   For those of you that don’t know, Agfest has an impressive history that began in May 1983.  The festival was the result of the Rural Youth committee, with the help of the Department of Agriculture.  The first festival included 111 exhibitors and was a 2 day event with 9000 people attending.   Today Agfest is even more extensive, running over 3 days and with even greater numbers attending from all over the country.

Entry fees are inexpensive, with adults costing $13.00 and kids only $3.00.  The festival is open from 8:00am till 5:00pm daily, with facilities such as toilet blocks, feeding and changing rooms and Eftpos machines.

This year, 2011, is gearing up to be one of the best years yet with many features and competitions.  In store for those attending is the sheep dog trails, show jumping, youth craft fashion parade, craft pavilion, dairy feature, fine food stall and much, much more.  Competitions for this year include the much loved Ag Art Wear event, where teens can recycle junk yard items into cool costumes as well as the rodeo and wood chopping.  There are prizes for the best preserves, jams and jelly’s, and also for cross stitch, embroidery, knitting and sowing.Livestock and farming equipment, such as tractors, are also on display, and patrons will have the opportunity to purchase and try out anything and everything that takes their fancy.Kids can indulge themselves with hay rides, face painting and the petting zoo.  And parents, rest assured, it is a very family orientated festival and there is no reason to leave the little ones at home.  However pets are not allowed within the festival so remember to leave your beloved pooch at home.  There is plenty of car parking available and easy to read directions on the agfest website www.agfest.com.au
